R.E.
At St. Mary’s P.S. our Catholic faith is central to the day-to-day life of our school and to all aspects of the curriculum. Our School currently use the Alive O programme, supplemented with other resources selected by class teachers.
We seek to support our pupils in extending their knowledge about Catholicism and to learn to apply the values and messages of the scriptures to their everyday lives. During R.E. lessons our pupils are provided with opportunities to develop the skills of discussion, debate and reflection.
We recognise that parents are the first and most important teachers of their children, particularly in the handing on of the faith. We aim to be supportive of that fundamental commitment and encourage as much parental involvement in meetings, celebrations, assemblies and Masses as possible.
Our pupils regularly attend Mass in St. Mary’s Church where they are supported at each stage of their faith journey by Fr. Michael Doherty, Fr. John Doherty and the entire Melmount Parish.

St. Brigid’s Crosses 2017
Primary seven pupils learned about St. Brigid and also the tradition of making St. Brigid’s crosses. They enjoyed this and it was lovely to see the tradition being passed on to another generation.
Primary 7 Confirmation Retreat 2016
Primary 7 pupils visited the Iosas Centre in Donegal for a day retreat in preparation for their confirmation. Whilst there, they took part in team building activities, explored the prayer garden and participated in a special Mass. This was a memorable day for all the pupils.
Primary 7 Confirmation Fun Day 2016
Primary 7 pupils visited the Brunswick Bowling Alley in Derry to celebrate their Confirmation Day. The pupils watched a movie, played bowls and had lunch. Much fun was had by all!
Stations of The Cross 2016
The Key Stage 2 pupils completed the Stations of the Cross in School during Holy Week. We closed the blinds in our School Assembly Hall, lit candles and played some reflective music; this gave pupils and staff a quiet place to think about the true meaning of Easter and the importance of it in the Church Year.
Not only did pupils learn about each Station of the Cross but they also reflected on how they could apply each one to their lives.
